Summer Movies to Rent on DVD

Blockbusters Like Spider-Man and Finding Nemo Make Great DVD Rentals

Choose a summer movie blockbuster from this list of top DVDs to rent and make your next movie night more enjoyable and affordable.

This summer, why stand in long lines and empty your wallet to see the latest movie releases? Renting DVDs of past movie blockbusters can offer you more choices than a movie theatre – and can be a lot more affordable than a night out.

Here’s a list of summer movies to rent of all genres that topped box offices in past summers, and continue to entertain audiences looking for films to rent.

Spider-Man 2 (2004)

Two years after becoming Spider-Man, Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) begins losing his powers, leaving him free to pursue a relationship with Mary Jane (Kirsten Dunst) and get his troubled life back in order. But when a lab accident turns a scientist into the deadly Dr. Octopus (Alfred Molina), Peter realizes he can’t escape his responsibilities and must regain his powers before this new super villain harms his friends and family.

Often regarded as one of the best superhero movies, Spider-Man 2 balances great special effects with a strong story about responsibility. While the fight sequences are amazing (you honestly feel like you’re web slinging with Spider-Man in some scenes) many audiences remember this movie for its love story between Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson, as well as Peter’s touching relationship with his Aunt May.

The Sixth Sense (1999)

When child psychiatrist Dr. Malcolm Crowe (Bruce Willis) meets Cole (Haley Joel Osmet), a young boy who claims he can see ghosts, he’s convinced Cole is troubled. But as Crowe investigates deeper, he learns disturbing truths not only about Cole’s ability but also his ghosts.

One of the top horror movies to rent for fans of psychological thrillers, The Sixth Sense is one film that will keep first-time audiences constantly reviewing scenes in the DVD to spot all the clues director M. Night Shyamalan slipped in that reveal the story's twist ending. One of the most popular DVD rentals for any season, The Sixth Sense is a psychological thriller that lingers in a viewer's mind long after the movie is over.

Forrest Gump (1994)

Over thirty years of U.S. history are seen through the eyes of Forrest Gump (Tom Hanks), a simple man with a low IQ and a huge heart. Through a mix of chance encounters and acts of decency, Gump wanders through the Vietnam War, Watergate scandal, and Hurricane Carmen -- and becomes a football star, war hero, ping pong champion, and shrimp tycoon in the process.

Hanks plays a likeable wise fool in this Academy Award-winning movie and shares great chemistry with his co-star Robin Wright Penn – who experiences a more tragic journey through the counter-culture revolution of the 1960s and 1970s as Gump’s girlfriend Jenny. One of those films to rent when you're in the mood for laughter and tears.

Finding Nemo (2003)

Ever since his family was killed in a tragic accident, clownfish Marlin (Albert Brooks) has been overly protective of his only surviving son, Nemo (Alexander Gould). But when Nemo is captured by a dentist for his fish tank, Marlin must team up with forgetful fish Dory (Ellen DeGeneres) to brave sharks in therapy, deadly jellyfish, and surfer turtles as he journeys through the ocean trying to find his son. Meanwhile, Nemo must face his own problems as he tries escaping from the tank with its wacky fish residents.

Equal parts Great Escape and Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, Finding Nemo is one of Pixar's most heartwarming films to rent for its message about when it's important to stick together -- and when it's time to let go.
